Mel, welcome back. Can you believe it? I came out... hah, I came out to say, "being in love with religion can be like being in love with an abusive partner." Just that sentence, I had to struggle to say it out in the open. How silly...

Yes, pls revise the anon.

MMM,

I'm glad you came out with this because I found it so compelling and because I think there's no possible offense to be taken by anyone who I care about offending. Do you mind if I revise the anon out of my post?

I think the codependency aspect of spouse abuse is a fine analogy for the way that folks identify self and self-worth with religiosity. And, like Cel, I think there's much to be written and shared from this angle.

Thanks Celi, you make a great point:). Yeah, when I said, "But we do that, don’t we? We feed the grass, we patch it, we ban the dog from running in it, and when it starts growing we cut it short" I was metaphorically trying to hint to the fact that us humans inflict this pain on ourselves. Clearly I tried to pack too many metaphors in this one.

You know, I've contemplated writing a book about my own twisted thoughts of religion. I love the subject and debating over theology. I like your analogy of religion as an abusive partner. One thing to remember however that when you are 'beaten' down your are caused to do so via the man-made rules and guidelines whereby most religions adhere by. So in the end it is Man that still beats you down.

Some are neccesary guidelines/rules of forced inadequacy to keep the masses in line - but that's a whole other chapter I need to dedicate time to.
